What is a Cataract?
A cataract is the progressive clouding of the eye’s natural lens, which sits just behind the iris and the pupil. In a healthy eye, this lens is crystal clear and functions like a camera lens, focusing light onto the retina to create sharp images.
As we age, the proteins within the lens begin to clump together. This creates a “fog” that prevents light from passing through clearly, leading to vision that feels dim, blurry, or yellowed.

What is Cataract Surgery?
Advanced cataract surgery is a highly effective way to reclaim crisp, clear vision and enhance your daily life. During this procedure, the cloudy lens is replaced with a customized intraocular lens (IOL) tailored to your specific needs. Beyond clearing your sight, our advanced IOL options offer the potential to achieve independence from glasses for distance, reading, or both, making every day easier and colors more vibrant.
Am I a candidate for cataract surgery?
Cataracts develop slowly, and it can be difficult to know exactly when to transition from stronger glasses to surgical intervention. At Eye Care Ltd, we recommend using this functional assessment to help determine if your quality of life is being impacted:
-
Safety & Mobility: Can you see well enough to safely perform your job and drive, particularly in heavy traffic?
-
Daily Leisure: Are you having significant trouble reading small print or watching television, even with your current glasses?
-
Routine Tasks: Is it becoming difficult or frustrating to cook, shop, do yard work, climb stairs, or read the labels on your medications?
-
Independence: Do your vision problems make you feel less confident or affect your level of independence in and out of the home?
-
Social Recognition: Do you have difficulty seeing faces clearly or recognizing friends from a distance?
-
Night Vision & Glare: Do bright lights and oncoming headlights make it hard to see or cause painful glare when driving at night?
If you answered “yes” to two or more of these questions, it may be time to consult with a board-certified ophthalmologist.

What is an Intraocular Lens?
During cataract surgery, your surgeon removes the eye’s natural, cloudy lens and replaces it with an Intraocular Lens (IOL). This permanent, medical-grade implant performs the essential role of focusing light onto the retina. While the primary goal of the IOL is to restore clarity lost to cataracts, modern lens technology now allows us to treat other vision issues—such as astigmatism and presbyopia—simultaneously.
Customized Surgical Planning
At Eye Care Ltd, we prioritize precise surgical planning to ensure the best possible visual outcomes.
- Your Preoperative Evaluation & Biometry: During your preoperative visit, our clinical staff will perform a painless, high-precision ultrasound known as Biometry. This essential test measures the exact size and shape of your eye.
- Customized Lens Selection: Your eye surgeon reviews these biometric results to calculate the precise power and type of Intraocular Lens (IOL) needed to correct your vision, including options for astigmatism or multi-focal correction.
- Pre-Surgery Medications: To minimize the risk of infection and inflammation, your surgeon may prescribe specialized antibiotic or anti-inflammatory eye drops. These are typically started one to two days prior to your surgery. Please follow the specific dosage instructions provided by our office.
- Fasting Guidelines (NPO): For your safety during sedation, you must follow strict fasting rules: Do not eat or drink anything (including water, gum, or mints) for at least 12 hours before your scheduled procedure time.
- Medical Clearance & Physical Exam: To ensure you are healthy enough for an outpatient procedure, a preoperative history and physical (H&P) is required. Our team will coordinate with your primary care physician to ensure all medical clearances are received.
